QMJHL Roundup: Rimouski Oceanic, Moncton Wildcats sweep first-round playoff series

Mael St-Denis’s power-play goal early in the second period stood as the winner as the Rimouski Oceanic beat the Charlottetown Islanders 4-1 to complete their four-game sweep in the first round of the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League playoffs.

Mael Lavigne and Mathieu Cataford added some insurance with goals in the third period for Rimouski. Jacob Mathieu opened the scoring early in the first.

Mathis Langevin made 26 saves for the win in net.

Maxwell Jardine replied for Charlottetown, and Nicolas Ruccia stopped 34 shots.

The Oceanic went 3 for 5 on the power play, and the Islanders couldn’t connect on their two-man advantages.

WILDCATS 4 REMPARTS 3

QUEBEC CITY — Alex Mercier’s goal early in the third period became the winner as Moncton held on for a narrow win over the Remparts.

The Wildcats swept the first-round series in four games.

Gabe Smith, Maxime Cote and Juraj Pekarcik staked Moncton to an early 3-0 lead in the first period.

Justin Cote had a pair of goals, and Thomas Auger added a single as Quebec rallied through the second and third periods.

OLYMPIQUES 3 HUSKIES 2 (OT)

GATINEAU, Que. — Maxim Dube scored in overtime as the Olympiques kept their playoff hopes alive in their series with Rouyn-Noranda.

The Huskies still hold a 3-1 advantage in the series.

Jeremie Minville and Lukas Landry scored in regulation time for Gatineau.

Thomas Chafe and Samuel Beauchemin responded for Rouyn-Noranda.

BATHURST, N.B. — Blake Pilgrim-Edwards and Dawson Sharkey had back-to-back goals in the second period as the Titan staved off elimination with a win.

Chicoutimi holds a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Loic Usereau opened scoring for the Sagueneens late in the first.

SYDNEY, N.S. — Lucas Beckman stopped all 30 shots he faced as Baie-Comeau shutout Cape Breton.

The Drakkar lead the series 3-1.

Justin Gendron struck twice for the Drakkar, and Raoul Boilard and Samuel Boisvert also scored.

Jakub Milota made 32 stops in net for the Eagles.

PHOENIX 4 ARMADA 3 (2OT)

SHERBROOKE, Que. — Jean-Felix Lapointe scored in double overtime as the Phoenix edged Blainville-Boisbriand.

Sherbrooke leads the series 3-1.

Robin Benoit had a pair of goals, and Louis-Alex Tremblay added another for the Phoenix.

Olivier Metcalfe and Egor Goriunov had back-to-back power-play goals for an early 2-0 Armada lead, and Ludovik Grenier added an even-strength goal near the game’s midway point.

HALIFAX — Ethan Gauthier had a hat trick as Drummondville skated past the Mooseheads.

The best-of-seven series is tied 2-2, with the home team losing every game in the best-of-seven series so far.

Owen Phillips was the lone Halifax scorer.
