Environment Canada issues heat warning for Fraser Canyon

LYTTON — Canada’s weather agency has now issued a heat warning for parts of southern B.C., ranging from Fraser Canyon and Howe Sound to East and Inland Vancouver Island.
Temperatures in the Canyon from Lillooet to Lytton are expected to reach a maximum between 35 and 37 C from today (Aug. 10) to Tuesday (Aug. 12).
“Check on family, friends and neighbours, who are at higher risk, particularly if they live alone, to make sure they have a cool space,” wrote Environment Canada. “Never leave susceptible people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle.”
Heat warnings are issued when temperature or humidity conditions pose a higher risk of illness, such as heat stroke or exhaustion.
Seniors and people with limited mobility, as well as those with pre-existing mental and physical health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or schizophrenia, are especially at risk.
Fraser Valley is exempt from the warning, but temperatures could still climb up to the low 30 C range until Tuesday.
Information on coping with extreme heat is available on Health Canada’s website.
