Rebuilding of Vancouver’s Broadway corridor to start in January as subway progresses

VANCOUVER — A traffic detour will be in place for about four months on Vancouver’s busy Broadway corridor starting in the new year as crews work to reinstall utilities and rebuild the route where a subway extension is under construction.

The B.C. government says in a statement that five temporary traffic decks were installed between Main and Quebec streets to keep traffic flowing during underground construction, but crews will start dismantling them in January.

The Transportation Ministry says crews need to cover the roof of the new Mount Pleasant station in soil, then repave the street, requiring a detour.

It says traffic will be diverted around the block and return to the section of Broadway with one lane in each direction after about four months.

The province says the approach is aimed at minimizing the length of time the work will affect residents, businesses and commuters in the area.

Four lanes of the major east-west thoroughfare in the city are expected to open starting next summer, along with wider sidewalks.

The Broadway project is a 5.7-kilometre extension of the existing Millennium Line SkyTrain service.

It’s scheduled to open in fall 2027 and will include six new underground stations.
