Fraser Valley dump truck driver garners 90-day ban for impaired driving: RCMP

LOWER MAINLAND — Less than a month after an Abbotsford commercial driver was caught for being impaired in Chilliwack, police say a dump truck has been impounded for 30 days, and its Fraser Valley driver has received a 90-day driving suspension for being impaired, following a commercial vehicle check earlier this month.
According to a statement from Burnaby RCMP Corporal Mike Kalanj, an RCMP officer from the Burnaby detachment and a Delta PD officer were conducting commercial vehicle checks on May 6, 2025, on Marine Drive near Glenlyon Parkway, in South Burnaby.
Officers identified a whopping 17 violations on a single dump truck. Five separate violations would have individually rendered the vehicle out of service on their own. The dump truck was rendered inoperable, impounded for 30 days and towed from the scene. Six violation tickets were issued, which amounted to $1,576 worth of fines.

The driver, who hails from Surrey, was subsequently found to be impaired and handed a 90-day driving suspension.
“This was the second time this calendar year that this driver and truck were removed from the roadway with multiple unsafe vehicle defects,” said Cst. Kevin Connolly with Burnaby RCMP’S Traffic Services. “We will be requesting a review of the company’s ability to operate in BC as well as a review of the driver’s class 1 licence.”
