Repeat offender arrested after setting fire to bushes in Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD — A man well known to police in Abbotsford is facing court once again following an arrest in late June.

Just after 10 a.m. on June 26, an unknown man reportedly approached a woman walking on a sidewalk in the 30800 block of Maclure Road and lit a lighter near her face.

He then set fire to nearby bushes.

Attending officers found and arrested 39-year-old Matthew Santoro for assault with a weapon, arson and obstruction.

Police say the woman is shaken, but physically unharmed.

“AbbyPD remains dedicated to identifying and arresting repeat offenders and ensuring they are held accountable before the courts,” said the Abbotsford Police Department.

“Through proactive enforcement, targeted patrols, investigations, and strong community partnerships, our officers continue to focus on individuals whose ongoing criminal behaviour poses a risk to public safety.”

Santoro was previously arrested for offences including breaking and entering and assault.

He is set to appear in court on July 16.
