Highway 1 reopens through Fraser Canyon after weather brings some reprieve from growing wildfire

BOSTON BAR — Highway 1 has reopened to traffic four days after it was shut down due to the Brunswick Creek wildfire burning on both ends of the Fraser River.

In an update shared by DriveBC at around 7:21 a.m., the highway has reopened to one lane of traffic each way between Boston Bar and Jackass Summit.

There is still no stopping between Boston Bar and Lytton, and a 60-kilometre-per-hour speed reduction is in effect.

Drivers are asked to watch for crews and signage.

Slightly cooler temperatures and lighter winds have helped crews minimize wildfire growth to roughly 565 hectares throughout Friday, with conditions expected to continue this weekend.

Wind and hot weather are expected to return Monday and Tuesday. Roughly 16 area fire departments are supporting the wildfire complex, with crews attacking the east flank to protect critical infrastructure.

BC Wildfire Service says the fire is still backing down the slope, but the current wind direction also continues to push it away from communities.

Heavy equipment is working along the south side of the Brunswick Creek fire and open roads to contain the fire perimeter.
