Hope receives $175K funding for wastewater planning

HOPE — The federal government is looking to build stronger communities in B.C., including the Fraser Valley, with a new round of infrastructure funding.

Fifty-four new building projects in the province are being supported through the Strategic Priorities Fund, a program allotted for projects that are beyond the financial capacity of a local government.

The District of Hope is set to receive $175,000 for long-term wastewater infrastructure planning. Its existing wastewater system of 49 kilometres in gravity pipes and seven kilometres in forcemains was first constructed in the early 1960s. The most recent update to the Sanitary Sewer Master Plan was released in 2020.

“For local governments across British Columbia, the right investment can support housing, foster connection and build strong communities,” said Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson. “These projects will make a lasting impact and reinforce our commitment to building bold, building strong, and building together.”

Chilliwack is also receiving $7 million for drinking water and sanitary sewer infrastructure upgrades, with Abbotsford receiving the same amount for the second phase of Fraser Highway improvements.

More than $326 million is set to be distributed under B.C.’s Build Communities Strong Fund for the 2026-27 round, with Ottawa contributing $152 million towards the projects.
