Today marks National Indigenous Veterans Day, established by the federal government to honour generations of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
A statement from National Defence says, “Indigenous veterans defended this land with courage and distinction throughout our history, including times when they faced discrimination and were denied the recognition and equality they deserved.
Recognition is an important part of reconciliation, but it must be accompanied by continued action, the statement continues. By recognizing the service of Indigenous Veterans and serving members, and learning from the experiences and perspectives they choose to share, we can help ensure their contributions are understood and respected today and into the future.”
The Royal Canadian Legion posted a tribute on social media, including Facebook.

Veterans Affairs says Canadians are invited to honour Indigenous Veterans and their families, reflecting on their enduring legacy, and reaffirm commitment to ensuring their service, sacrifices, and achievements continue to be recognized and remembered.
Upper Fraser Valley RCMP also posted on Facebook, “On Indigenous Veterans Day, we honour the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Veterans who have served and continue to serve with distinction.
They have a long and proud tradition of military service to our country. Their contributions to Canada, both in times of war and peace, have helped shape the country we know today.
Today, we remember their bravery and express our gratitude for their service.”
