CHILLIWACK – A spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP detachment says police are actively investigating the defacement of a downtown Indigenous mural and urge anyone with tips to contact them.
According to a statement from Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener, police are treating the incident seriously due to the fact it happened on the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (Tuesday, May 5).
“The mural holds significant cultural, historical, and spiritual meaning for members of the local Indigenous community,” Corporal Kiener said. “Acts of vandalism against culturally significant artwork are taken very seriously, as they impact not only property but also community well-being, identity, and respect. Police recognize the deep concern and hurt this incident may cause and remain committed to supporting the community and holding those responsible accountable.”
Police received a report Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. that the mural of Inez, a local Stó:lō woman, had been damaged. Unknown individuals defaced the artwork with paint, rendering the mural beyond repair and requiring a complete restoration.
“The investigation is ongoing and we are asking anyone who has information to come forward,” Cpl. Kiener said. “Officers are exploring all avenues of evidence to determine who was responsible.”
The RCMP file number is 2026-18522. The Chilliwack RCMP phone number is 604-792-4611.
A GoFundMe has been initiated by Chilliwack resident Amber Price to restore the mural by bringing respected muralist Kevin Ledo back to Chilliwack. As of Thursday morning, it has generated an outpouring of support with over $13,000 raised. It can be found here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/kevinledomural.
