RCMP officers respond to Harrison Lake after getting SOS from stranded boat
Agassiz RCMP towed a boat over the long weekend after they got an SOS signal
HARRISON LAKE – Mounties in Agassiz say they were able to assist a vessel on Harrison Lake after getting an SOS signal from the boat over the long weekend.
According to a statement from police, Agassiz RCMP responded to an SOS signal from a vessel on Harrison Lake after the boat experienced mechanical failure and was unable to restart. Six occupants were on board and reported to be in good spirits, police said.
Police say their officers responded quickly and successfully towed the vessel and its occupants to safety.
“Quick thinking and proper equipment can make all the difference in an emergency. In this case, an emergency call made from the operator’s cell phone contributed to a safe resolution,” police said.
Police say the incident serves as a reminder about important safety tips as the busy summer boating season approaches:
- Always carry a reliable primary communication device (VHF radio, cell phone, or emergency beacon).
- Let someone know your trip plan and expected return time.
- Check weather and water conditions before heading out.
- Ensure your vessel is properly maintained and fueled.
Police are also urging boating operators to carry all required safety equipment, including life jackets for all passengers.
