Man pulls knife on Abbotsford first responders during medical call

ABBOTSFORD – Police in Abbotsford say a combative man is facing a criminal charge after he became assaultive toward paramedics and brandished a knife during a medical call at an Abbotsford park Monday evening.

Abbotsford PD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker told Fraser Valley Today in a text message that police were called to Mill Lake Monday (July 20) for a disturbance.

Sgt. Walker said a man became assaultive towards an ambulance crew who had been helping him as a result of a medical call. The man pulled a knife on the paramedics and refused to exit the ambulance, Sgt. Walker said.

When police arrived, the man remained noncompliant with Abbotsford PD officers. As a result, a less lethal shot gun was used at the scene, resulting in the man’s arrest.

Criminal charges of assault with a weapon are being recommended.

“The file is active and still unfolding,” Sgt. Walker told Fraser Valley Today Monday evening. “The park is safe. There are no public safety concerns.”

A police dog was present during the police encounter at Mill Lake, but was not utilized, Sgt. Walker pointed out.
