Canada’s Sarah Mitton repeats as women’s shot put champion at Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW — Canada’s Sarah Mitton successfully defended her women’s shot put title at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old from Brooklyn, N.S., recorded a winning throw of 19.88 metres on her fifth attempt to take gold by more than two metres.

“I’m pretty proud,” Mitton told Athletics Canada. “Every time you step into the stadium, there’s a chance that it doesn’t go your way and you do everything in your power to make your dreams come true.

“Tonight, to be able to stand on the podium and be a two-time Commonwealth Games champion is, is very special to me.”

Nigeria’s Jessica Oji won silver and Jamaica’s Lloydricia Cameron took bronze, both with throws of 17.87. Oji finished second based on her better next-best throw of 17.70.

Mitton, who represented Canada at the past two Summer Olympics, is also a two-time world indoor champion and the 2023 world silver medallist.

Earlier Wednesday, Alex Bellemarre captured silver in the men’s 94-kilogram weightlifting category.

The 28-year-old from La Sarre, Que., set a Commonwealth record with a 159-kilogram snatch before lifting 187 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a total of 346.

Malaysia’s Mohamad Syahmi Bin Nor-Ghazali won gold with a total of 347 after setting a Games record of 197 kilograms in the clean and jerk. Australia’s Oliver Riley Saxton took bronze with 336.

Rose Beaudoin of Ste-Marie-Madeleine, Que., won Canada’s second weightlifting medal of the day with bronze in the women’s 86-kilogram event.

Beaudoin lifted 103 kilograms in the snatch and 127 in the clean and jerk for a total of 230.

Reed De’Aeth scored a game-high nine points with four rebounds and five assists as Canada’s men’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team won bronze with a 19-9 victory over host Scotland. Garrett Ostepchuk added five points, two rebounds and three assists.

“I think mentally we just stayed focused on the moment,” Ostepchuk said. “We didn’t let too much affect us mistakes-wise or the officiating or what Scotland were doing. We just focused on our game, and that was the goal the entire time.”

The Canadian women fell 19-17 to Australia in their bronze-medal game.

Wheelchair racer Nandini Sharma of Brampton, Ont., was stripped of a silver medal after she was disqualified for obstruction in the women’s 1,500-metre T54 final following a season-best 3:42.38.

Athletics Canada appealed the disqualification, but the jury’s decision was to let the disqualification stand and that the race to be re-run with the remaining athletes.

“While AC is disappointed with this decision, we accept the process and look forward to Nandini competing again in the T53/54 400-metre race,” Athletics Canada said in a statement.

One day after securing five medals at the pool, Canada struck out on the final day of swimming competitions with multiple near misses.

Toronto’s Joshua Liendo, who won gold in the men’s 100 butterfly Sunday, placed fourth in the 50 butterfly in 23.30 seconds, 0.38 shy of a medal.

The women’s 4×100 medley relay team, led by 11-time Commonwealth medallist Kylie Masse of LaSalle, Ont., then finished 0.12 seconds off the podium.

Canada led after the first two legs and remained in medal position for most of the race before South Africa’s Rebecca Meder caught Madison Kryger of Niagara, Ont., late in the freestyle anchor leg. Australia won gold and Scotland claimed silver.

In boxing, Edmonton’s Amber-Jane Wall advanced to the women’s 51kg semifinals with a unanimous 5-0 victory over Niamh Brookes of Wales. Joshua Ofori, also from Edmonton, moved on to the men’s 70kg final four via walkover.

Canada sat second in the Commonwealth table with 14 gold medals, trailing only Australia’s 47. Canada also had 11 silver and 14 bronze for 39 total medals through Day 6 of the Games.

Competitions continue through Sunday.
