Chilliwack fire crews put out small blaze in brush of trees near parking lot

CHILLIWACK — Firefighters in Chilliwack responded to a small tree fire near an empty parking lot before it could spread to the surrounding brush.

Scanner traffic says at around 11:10 a.m. Saturday, August 1, three fire engines and three RCMP vehicles responded to the scene of a tree on fire by the Tim Hortons at Airport Road and Young Road.

Assistant Fire Chief Chris Wilson says the blaze was confined to one tree. The cause remains under investigation.

A witness told Fraser Valley Today that a nearby encampment had allegedly been burning materials underneath the tree before it set ablaze.

An arborist with Public Works has been called to cut the tree due to the hazards it poses.
