Surrey Memorial Hospital opens new renal facility

SURREY — Patients with kidney concerns may now have better access to care in the region with the opening of a new renal facility at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

The recently opened facility is adding 21 new hemodialysis treatment stations, bringing the total to 60 in the hospital.

Surrey Hospitals Foundation supported the $85 million project with $1 million in donations, with the remaining balance from the B.C. government.

“People in Surrey and surrounding communities who rely on life-saving kidney care will benefit from this new renal facility,” said Health Minister Josie Osborne. “It’s an important step in our work to support a rapidly growing community, strengthen health services at Surrey Memorial Hospital and improve access to care across the province.”

Located at the northwestern corner of the hospital campus, the facility operates seven days a week and is set to boost dialysis treatment capacity by roughly 55 per cent.

It is part of a broader expansion to strengthen community healthcare, including a new medical school at Simon Fraser University, as well as a new hospital and B.C. Cancer Centre in Cloverdale.

“Living with kidney disease can be challenging, and this new centre provides a welcoming, purpose-built environment where people can receive the treatment they need with dignity and confidence,” said Dermot Kelly, Fraser Health CEO. 

“This investment is about enhancing the experience of care, supporting our care teams and ensuring we are well-positioned to meet the needs of people for years to come.”

Renovations on the final operating room, expanded medical imaging services, construction for a second MRI scanner, new patient waiting areas at Surrey Memorial are set to begin in 2026, with a new CT scanner suite at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surey Centre expected to be complete in late 2026.
