56-year-old man dies after shooting in Maple Ridge

MAPLE RIDGE – Homicide investigators have been called to Maple Ridge after a 56-year-old man who was shot and wounded roughly two weeks ago succumbed to his injuries earlier this week.

Maple Ridge Mounties were called to the 11400 block of 236 Street in Maple Ridge on Tuesday, Aug. 18 shortly after 10 p.m. after getting a report of shots fired there. Police arrived and found a 56-year-old man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound inside a vehicle. The man was transported to hospital in critical condition.

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong says the 56-year-old shooting victim died this past Monday, Aug. 31, in hospital.

Sgt. Fong says IHIT has assumed conduct of the investigation and is working in close partnership with the Maple Ridge RCMP Serious Crime Unit, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Maple Ridge RCMP previously said the victim was known to police.

Investigators have reason to suspect this was a targeted incident involving parties who were known to each other.

The victim won’t be identified at this time because it is not needed to advance IHIT’s probe, Sgt. Fong said.

“We are grateful to the Maple Ridge RCMP Serious Crime Unit, which has been conducting a thorough and robust investigation to date,” Sgt. Fong said. “With the victim’s death, IHIT investigators are now in a good position to take over conduct of the homicide investigation. Investigators continue to work with the victim’s family and friends to gain an understanding of his activities, relationships and movements leading up to his death.”
