No election campaign needed for some FVRD area directors after being acclaimed

CHILLIWACK – Four Fraser Valley Regional District elected officials won’t have to campaign over the next month now that they’ve been acclaimed.

In a statement, the FVRD said four area directors have been acclaimed following the close of the nomination period.

They include Chilliwack River Valley Area E Director Patti MacAhonic, Area H Director Taryn Dixon representing Columbia Valley and Lindell Beach, Area D Director Bill Dickey representing Popkum, and Area C Director Mel Waardenburg (representing Hemlock Valley, Harrison Mills, Lake Errock and Weaver Creek and several First Nations including Douglas, Leq’a:mel, Samahquam, Scowlitz, Skatin and Sts’ailes).

The FVRD noted that a candidate is acclaimed when the number of eligible candidates nominated does not exceed the number of seats available, meaning no vote is required for that position.

It should be noted that elections will still occur in Electoral Areas A (Boston Bar, North Bend, Canyon Alpine) and B (Yale, Choate, Dogwood Valley, Emory Creek, Laidlaw, Othello, Ruby Creek, Spuzzum, and Sunshine Valley).

There are five candidates in Electoral Area A, including Brittany Alenius, Ellen Atkin, Attila Banhegyi, Diane Johnson and Carly Thompson. The two candidates in Electoral Area B are Peter Adamo and Dennis Adamson.

The election will be held on Saturday, October 17.
