What people are saying about the B.C. election campaign

VANCOUVER — The snap election in British Columbia is over and Lorne Deorkson has led his Conservatives to victory.

Here’s what some notable people are saying about the election.

Conservative premier-designate Lorne Doerkson celebrating his party’s majority win at an event in Vancouver:

“Tonight, British Columbia made a choice, and it is going to be the honour of my lifetime to serve you as your premier. And I am gonna give this job everything that I’ve got, I promise you that.”

__

Outgoing NDP Leader David Eby announcing that he would be resigning:

“This is obviously something I do with a very heavy heart. But it is time for new leadership within our party,”

__

BC Green Party Leader Emily Lowan at a postelection party in Brentwood Bay:

“I’m gonna be honest, I’m scared. I am scared for what’s to come. The Conservative agenda is one of cuts to the programs that we rely on the most. It’s one of culture wars and needless attacks on human rights and the basic tenets of a dignified life. It stands against everything that brought this movement together.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney congratulating Doerksen:

“I look forward to working with you as premier to get more homes built, unleash our full potential as an energy superpower, and build a stronger British Columbia and a stronger Canada for all.”

__

Stockwell Day, a former federal Conservative cabinet minister, at the B.C. Conservative’s postelection party:

“It’s been a great campaign, I think the strategy was right. I think people just want back to normal. I think the other part of the strategy was just to stand back and let Mr. Eby keep talking and it seems to have worked.”

__

Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre congratulating Doerkson:

“I look forward to working together to save Canadians money and jobs, lock up criminals, reduce immigration, and put Canada first.”

__

Former Green Party MLA Rob Botterell at the Green Party’s postelection party on Leader Emily Lowan:

“I am so proud of Emily and the campaign she’s run. And what I see when I talk to folks in Sidney and in the riding is they’re equally just totally impressed by Emily and her poise and her advocacy and her passion and her vision.”

Brian Gardiner, former NDP provincial director at the New Democrat postelection party:

“There’s no question Lorne Doerkson was a better opponent than John Rustad was and ran a much better campaign that was run two short years ago,” he said. “I think I would have said that it would have been worth waiting a couple of weeks to understand what was going to shake out in terms of both municipal campaigns and the Conservative leadership. But at the same time, the campaign was ready to go and it’s hard when you are ready to go and not go forward with the plans you have.”
