Workers at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver ratify new contract with better wages, benefits

VANCOUVER — A union representing hundreds of workers at a historic hotel in Vancouver says members have voted to ratify a new contract with significant raises.
Unifor Local 114 says the three-year deal includes wage hikes between 10 per cent and 23 per cent, along with more vacation days, better working conditions, and improved health and vision benefits.
The union represents 445 housekeeping and food and beverage staff at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.
The luxury hotel opened in 1939 in the city’s financial district and is one of Canada’s grand railway hotels.
Earlier this year, workers at the Empress, the company’s sister hotel in Victoria, ratified a similar deal.
Unifor national president Lana Payne says hotel workers make the city run and “deserve a fair share of what they help build.”
“These members stood together and won real raises, better benefits and stronger protections on the job,” Payne said in a news release Tuesday.
