ABBOTSFORD – When students finish up at the University of the Fraser Valley, they sometimes leave their bicycles behind. Unfortunately, they’re not always in the best shape.
According to UFV, its Office of Sustainability came up with a plan to keep the bikes out of the landfill and give them a new lease on life. Alicia Nightingale with the department teamed up with community member Robert Paddon, who is involved with HUB Cycling.
Funding from the GoByBike BC Society and the provincial government has allowed them to get the bikes repaired and offered free of charge to students who need a bicycle but have been unable to get one.
According to the university, the first round has already attracted applications from three dozen students. The bikes not only help them get to school, they also provide a way to help them unwind and get some exercise.
Organizers are in discussion with police and cycling organizations about other ways to find bikes for the program, including recovered bicycles that have gone unclaimed. Anyone interested in donating one is asked to reach out to the Office of Sustainability.
UFV says the program supports its mission of waste reduction and encouraging active transportation.
